As always, we’re here geeking out over some data.

This time it’s data from the 2018 Canadian Powerlifting National Championships.  This meet was the largest competition in the history of Canada with over 523 athletes.

Below we have two data sets to show you.  Both data sets look at athletes’ Wilks scores and use a normally distributed bell curve for analysis.

1.  Male and Female Wilks

KEY POINTS

MEN (orange)

  • 68% of men have a Wilks between 344 and 459 (the average is 402).

  • If you Wilks above 517 you’re in the top 2.5%. If you Wilks below 286 you’re in the bottom 2.5%.

  • If you Wilks 574 or above you’re in the top 0.0015%. If you Wilks below 229 you’re in the bottom 0.0015%.

WOMEN (green)

  • 68% of women fall between 307 and 426 Wilks (the average is 367)

  • If you Wilks above 486 you’re in the top 2.5%. If you Wilks below 246 you’re in the bottom 2.5%.

  • If you Wilks 546 or above you’re in the top 0.0015%. If you Wilks below 186 you’re in the bottom 0.0015%.

Conclusion:  Overall, men outperformed women from a wilks standpoint.  There are limitations in this data as it does not include segments based on age or weight class.

2.  2017 VS. 2018 Wilks

KEY POINTS

2017 (orange)

  • The average Wilks was 393.

  • 68% of athletes fall between 336 and 450 Wilks.

  • If you Wilks 507 or above you’re in the top 2.5%. If you Wilks below 279 you’re in the bottom 2.5%.

  • If you Wilks 564 or above you’re in the top 0.0015%. If you Wilks below 222 you’re in the bottom 0.0015%.

2018 (green)

  • The average Wilks was 386.

  • 68% of athletes fall between 325 and 447 Wilks.

  • If you Wilks 509 or above you’re in the top 2.5%. If you Wilks below 264 you’re in the bottom 2.5%.

  • If you Wilks 569 or above you’re in the top 0.0015%. If you Wilks below 203 you’re in the bottom 0.0015%.

Conclusion:  Overall, the results show that lifters who competed in 2017 performed better than in 2018.  One hypothesis for these results is that there were approximately 75 more athletes in 2018 versus 2017.   The 2018 sample might be more representative of the skill level of the broader powerlifting population. There are limitations in this data as it does not include segments based on age, weight, or gender.
